CLAYTON — A Clayton man was indicted last week on second-degree murder charges for the alleged abuse of his 10-month-old child who later died at a Baton Rouge hospital.

Trashone D. Mayes, 24, of 204 Bingham St., Clayton, was arrested on Nov. 15 and transported to the Concordia Parish Jail where he was initially charged with attempted first-degree murder.

In earlier reports, Lt. Philip Smith of the CPSO said the infant was left in Mayes’ care while the rest of the family was away at work and school on Nov. 14, and when family members returned home, the child was unresponsive, Smith said.

The family took the child to Riverland Medical Center, Concordia Parish Chief Deputy David Hedrick said, and the child was airlifted to Our Lady of the Lakes in Baton Rouge, where the child died.

Judge Don Burns in the Seventh Judicial District Court in Vidalia changed the charge to murder after the child died due to injuries, Hedrick said.

Hedrick said Mayes remained detained at CPSO following his indictment last week and has a court date scheduled for April 24.

If convicted, Mayes could face life imprisonment at hard labor without benefit of parole, probation or suspension of sentence according to Louisiana law, Hedrick said.
