So far this year, coach Larry Wesley said Natchez High’s track teams have been in several meets in which 12 to 14 other teams competed.

“We have been in the top four on three occasions this year,” Wesley said.

For both the boy’s team and the girl’s team there are 17 events at every track meet.

Most all of the athletes compete in more than one event, many compete in three or four per meet.

For Wesley’s young team’s, he has some multiple event athlete’s.

Tabius Woods a junior competes in the high jump, the long jump, the four-man team 4×100 meter race and the 4×200. Woods runs the first leg of both.

Isaiah Wesley also a junior excels in the 4×800 meters, the individual 800 meters, the mile run and the second leg of the 4×400.

For the girls team Junior Courtney Beverly runs the 4×200 the 4×400 the 4×800 and the individual 400 meters where she finished second in her last meet.

Freshman Carmen Butler is busy with five events per meet.

She runs the 300 meter race, the 100 meter hurdles, the 4×100 the 4×200 and the triple jump.

Wesley has been the track coach at Natchez High for almost 20 years, having taken over from legend Henry Woods.

Wesley and his teams have won six state championships, and Wesley coaches both the boy’s and the girl’s teams.

Both of which have won the regional South State title the last three years. Both teams will be going for a four-peat this year.

“We have four weeks to go in the season and our district competition starts next week,” Wesley said.
