NATCHEZ — Natchez Police officers are investigating a shooting that injured a man at the holiday apartments at approximately 5:10 p.m. Monday, officials said.

The victim, Fredrick Redden, 27, was transported to Merit Health Natchez with what was believed to be a non-life-threatening gunshot wound, said Walter Armstrong, Natchez police chief.

“He was still alert,” Armstrong said. “He did have a conversation with law enforcement at the hospital.”

Armstrong said he believes the bullet struck Redden in the back and traveled through his body.

Armstrong said Monday night that a preliminary investigation revealed an argument broke out among several residents outside of an apartment in the Holiday Apartments complex shortly before Redden was shot.

“There were several eyewitnesses on the scene whenever Mr. Redden was shot,” Armstrong said. “We are in need of speaking to those eyewitnesses who clearly saw the entire altercation leading up to and including this shooting.”

Redden was being prepared Monday night to be transported to a Jackson hospital, Armstrong said.

Investigators are scanning video captured by surveillance cameras installed in the Holiday Apartment complex, Armstrong said.

“We are currently going through various videos and speaking to some eyewitnesses,” Armstrong said. “However, we are in need of speaking to those who were in a position to see exactly what happened.”

Armstrong asked anyone with any information on the incidents leading up to and including the shooting to call the Natchez Police Department at 601-445-5565 and ask to speak to Lt. Scott Frye, Armstrong or any other investigators. Or, witnesses can call in tips anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 601-442-5000.
