WCCA falls to CA Rebels

WOODVILLE — What was originally scheduled to be a single game between Claiborne Academy and Wilkinson County Christian Academy ended up being a doubleheader late Monday afternoon in the semifinals of the 2019 MAIS Class A South State Tournament.

Well, that did not help WCCA as for the second year in a row the Rams were eliminated by the Rebels and this time they were shut out in both games, losing by scores of 13-0 in six innings in Game 1 and 12-0 in just four innings in Game 2.

Concerns about the forecast of rain in Haynesville, La. on Thursday, which is where defending Class A South State champion Claiborne Academy is located, forced the unexpected change in the schedule.

The first game was not the prettiest of match-ups as the two teams combined for just five base hits. The Rebels had four of them and were aided by multiple errors committed by the Rams. So many that head coach Ken Perry wouldn’t say just how many.

The District 5-A champion Rebels scored three runs in the top of the second inning to break a scoreless tie and the rout was on.

They added two runs in the top of the third inning and broke the game open with five runs in the top of the fourth for a 10-0 lead.

RJ Fisher was charged with the loss and D’Mario Weathersby had the only base hit for WCCA.

Claiborne Academy was the home team for Game 2 and it could not have started worse for WCCA.

After a 1-2-3 top of the first inning, the Rams saw the Rebels plate seven runs in the bottom of the first. The Rebels added one run in the bottom of the second, three runs in the bottom of the third, and one run in the bottom of the fourth.

“We had a lot of rainouts. Claiborne played 28 games to our 11. They have a lot of seniors,” Perry said. “They had good pitching. They had two big boys, one left-handed and one right-handed. They both threw hard. That’s probably the best pitching we’ve seen all year.”

The Rebels had seven base hits, three of them going for extra bases. The Rams, on the other hand, only had two base hits — singles by Thomas Vannoy and Jack Orgeron.

Claiborne Academy will look to win its second straight Class A South State title when it takes on the winner of the series between Tallulah Academy and Discovery Christian School next week.

WCCA, the runner-up in MAIS District 4-A, finished with an overall record of 4-7.
