NATCHEZ — Services for coach Iris Jean Poole Eddy, 91, who died peacefully in her sleep at the Bethany House in Auburn, Ala., Wednesday morning, May 29, 2019, will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Laird Funeral Home Chapel with her younger brothers, the Rev. Booth Poole and the Rev. Bill Poole officiating.

Burial will follow at Jersey Settlers Cemetery in Kingston under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home. All are welcome to attend and celebrate the life of Iris Eddy.

Mrs. Eddy was born April 20, 1928, in Gloster, the daughter of James Willis Poole and Ruby Rae Poole.

She was a 1951 graduate of University of Southern Mississippi with a degree in physical education. She married William “Bill” Eddy, a career U.S. Air Force serviceman, in 1960. She taught physical education and coached basketball for 30 years, finishing up her career in Satellite Beach, Fla.

Iris was a gifted athlete, earning a number of recognitions during her time in high school and college. She was an All-State athlete in basketball from 1948 to 1949 at Copiah-Lincoln Community College. She was voted “Best Female Athlete” at USM in 1951. In 1999, she was inducted into the Co-Lin Athletic Hall of Fame.

Survivors include her husband of Opelika, Ala.; one son, Michael Eddy and wife, Sonja Wolfe Eddy, of Auburn, Ala.; one granddaughter, Breggin Eddy of Auburn; and two grandsons, Bandon Eddy and Peyton Eddy, both of Auburn.

Pallbearers will be Brandon Eddy, Breggin Eddy, Stennis Poole, Shannon Poole, Scott Poole and Christ Poole.
