NATCHEZ — Three weeks of practice into the summer-fall softball season leaves the Cathedral girls’ softball team less than a week before their first game.

The lady Green Wave will travel to Centreville on Friday to play Centreville Academy.

Head coach Craig Beesley watched batting practice take place Thursday afternoon at the Cathedral softball field, and he was happy.

“We have been working hard at the plate,” Beesley said. “I like to see everybody get about 60 cuts at the plate. We are going to have the most competitive district in our classification and will play some new and bigger schools.”

Last year senior Baylee Graning played shortstop and was the lead off hitter.

“Baylee was an all-star and All-State MAIS, not only did she have athletic ability, but she had leadership skills, too,” Beesley said. “Haley Ellis has locked down centerfield and will get the chance to be our lead-off hitter replacing Graning.”

Other seniors were Mia Gamberi and Yani Rojo who Beesley said were good teammates and were influential to the team.

The shortstop gets a lot of business to take care of during a game and several seventh graders are on the team to try out.

“We might have to move Allie Feltus from third base to short,” Beesley said.

Madeline Smith will pitch the first game Friday for Cathedral. Anna Poole will also be in the pitching rotation this year, Beesley said.

Every team has a captain who takes on the responsibility to lead, this year it will be Fisher Iseminger who will be in that role.

“She will take over as our team captain and team leader,” Beesley said. “She is very vocal and knows how to lead.”
