VIDALIA — Two football players from Concordia Parish will have a chance to play against each other in the Louisiana Gridiron Football All-Star Bowl game on Saturday.

CJ Chatman, from Vidalia High School, and Kavarius Whitehead, from Delta Charter, were invited to play in the All-Star Bowl game at 5 p.m. Saturday at Louisiana College.

When Chatman heard the news two days after the Vidalia High Vikings lost 59-0 to Many High School in the first round of the Louisiana High School Athletics Association Class 2A playoffs, Chatman said he was surprised and couldn’t believe he was named to the team.

“I didn’t know I played to that level this year,” Chatman said. “I felt like I didn’t play as good as I should have played this season.”

For the Vikings this season, Chatman obtained 149 total tackles and seven sacks. He also caused three fumbles and recovered two fumbles.

“He dominated everybody he played against,” Rob Faircloth, Vidalia High School Head Football Coach, said. “On Saturdays after the games on Fridays, I would break down the film. I would be in awe of how he controlled the line of scrimmage at his position on just about every single down.”

Chatman will play on the Blue team while Whitehead will play on the Red team.

This season for the Delta Charter Storm, Whitehead completed 47 out of 121 passes with 786 passing yards and nine passing touchdowns.

Whitehead was also good on his feet as well. He rushed for 159 carries with 646 rushing yards with nine rushing touchdowns. Whitehead averaged 53.8 yards a game on the ground.

Chatman and Whitehead are two players from Concordia Parish named to play in the All-Star Bowl game on Saturday. In the All-Star Bowl game last season, Jarred Simpson, from Vidalia High School, and Freddie Mango, from Delta Charter, played in the game. To have two players play in the bowl game, Faircloth said it means Concordia Parish has great talent level.

“It’s a pretty good bit of talent and right down the road, you have the Class 2A state champion, who absolutely dominated everyone,” Faircloth said. “It just shows that Vidalia is athletic and talented. It’s an honor not only for CJ but for Vidalia to be represented in the game.”
