NATCHEZ — Natchez Mayor Darryl Grennell was tested for COVID-19 Monday and is awaiting test results.

Grennell is under self-quarantine at home because he tested positive for the flu on Monday.

Grennell said he went to the doctor Monday after he developed flu-like symptoms following recent travel to Washington, D.C., and New Orleans, two areas in the country that have become high-risk centers for COVID-19.

The mayor said he had been experiencing symptoms common to a respiratory illness, but not the shortness of breath associated with the new coronavirus.

Although Grennell tested positive for the flu, doctors tested the mayor for COVID-19 because of his recent travel and his symptoms.

Grennell said he expects to get the test results back in four days.

Until then Grenell said he would be at home recuperating. The mayor will be conducting business online and on the phone.

“I am under self-quarantine,” Grennell said, “But I would be anyway because I am recovering from the flu.”
