NATCHEZ — A two-vehicle accident that occurred near the intersection of U.S. 61 North and U.S. 84 just before 2 p.m. Thursday afternoon caused one vehicle to overturn several times, officials said.

The Natchez Fire Department had been called to the scene of the accident at approximately 2 p.m. Thursday and arrived within approximately eight minutes to extract the driver of a 2006 black Hummer from the vehicle, Fire Chief Ventris Green said.

The driver, a 44-year-old female, had to be airlifted to Rapides Regional Medical Center with moderate to severe injuries.

“I’m very proud of the firefighters at Station 4. They were very expedient in getting to the scene and extracting the victim from the vehicle,” Green said.

Craig James, Mississippi Highway Patrol public information officer, said the Hummer was northbound on U.S. 61 when it collided with a 2010 red Toyota Corolla that was attempting to turn onto U.S. 84 from the southbound side of U.S. 61.

The driver and passengers in the Toyota Corolla were uninjured during the accident, James said.
