BATON ROUGE — Services for Lily Margaret Clark Ewell, 88, of Baton Rouge, formerly of Amite County, who died, Friday, Oct. 2, 2009 at her home at Williamsburg Senior Living Community in Baton Rouge, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Newman Funeral Home in Centreville with the Rev. Alvin Hall officiating. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Cemetery under the direction of Newman Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Ewell was born May 24, 1921 in Wilkinson County, the daughter of John Wellington and Hattie Artemis White Clark. She lived most of her life as a resident of Amite County.

While studying nursing at Field Memorial hospital she met and married the love of her life thus abandoning her career in 1943.

For more than 60 years she owned and operated Ewell Cattle Farm and Whispering Hope Pine Plantation with her husband William M. Ewell Sr. Together they developed one of the state’s most successful cattle herds and had a major impact on the timber industry by providing seedlings from the progeny trees for reforestation programs throughout the South. She and her husband were named Farm Family of the Year in 1991.

She was passionate about farming, horticulture, gardening, cooking and nurturing her family and friends. She had a special love for many nieces and nephews. She devoted countless hours over many years to tutoring reading to those who were unable to receive a formal education.

Mrs. Ewell was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents; three children, Dr. Margaret Yvonne Rider, Shirley Marie Smith and Dr. William M. Ewell Jr. and one grandson, William M. Ewell III.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Judy Ewell and Ben Louis Day of Baton Rouge; three grandsons, Jason Goldsmith of London, England, Adam Ewell Day of Centreville and Ethan Ewell of Hattiesburg; three granddaughters, Shannon Eaves of Starkville, Amanda Treadway of New York City and Daisy Lucas of Hattiesburg and three great-granddaughters, Ava Marie Treadway, Valarie and Christina Eaves.

The family wishes to acknowledge with grateful appreciation the wonderful caregivers, friends, nurses and physicians who honored Mrs. Ewell with such love, attention and care.
