JACKSON — Services for Margarette M. Wells, 86, who died Friday, Nov. 13, 2009 in Jackson, will be 11 a.m. Monday at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home on High Street.
Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Midway Cemetery in Meadville.
Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Wells was born May 28, 1923 in Bude, Mississippi, the daughter of Harry M. Mathews Sr. and Ruby Zumbro Mathews. She attended Bude public schools and Spring Hill College, and was graduated from Belhaven College in 1944. She taught school in Franklin County, 1944-51, and following her marriage to Calvin Bert Wells that year, taught junior high social studies in the Natchez Public School System, where she later became a supervisor of teaching and curriculum. She was a member of the Natchez Garden Club and Jefferson Street United Methodist Church.
Following the death of her husband in 1988, she moved to Jackson, where she was active in the Just Older Youth group at Christ United Methodist Church, as a volunteer with the Splendors of Versailles and Palaces of St. Petersburg exhibits, and as a Hinds County poll worker.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Calvin, her daughter-in-law Marsha McCarty Wells, and by a brother, Harry M. Mathews Jr.
Survivors include her children, Laurence Buie Wells of Jackson, Terrence Bert Wells of Ridgeland, Cheri Wells Heflin of Gulfport, Cassi Wells Grier of Spartanburg, South Carolina,; five grandchildren, Ashley Lauren Wells Hullender of Memphis, Leslie Victoria Wells of Ridgeland, John Calvin Heflin of Gulfport, James Calvin Mathew Grier and Laurence Harper Grier of Spartanburg; and one sister, Madge Mathews Waterloo of Jackson.
