GREENVILLE, N.C. — Memorial services for Catherine Handjis, 92, who went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012, will be at Evangel Temple in Columbus, Ga. The date and time will be announced at a later date.
Burial will be in the Handjis family plot at White Plains Rural Cemetery under the direction of Smith Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Greenville, N.C.
Miss Handjis was born July 26, 1920, in Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of Margaret Christina Ritchie Handjis and John Louis Handjis. She spent her childhood in Samos, Greece, and returned to the states in her teen years. She lived with her father and stepmother, Fredia Braun Handjis, in White Plains, N.Y.
Miss Handjis worked as a hairdresser and was employed by Edna’s of London for a number of years, working into her late 70s. She lived in Alabama with her niece and her husband, Chris and Dan Smith, since 2003.
Miss Handjis valued her religious beliefs above all. She was a founding member of her church in White Plains, a faithful member of Evangel Temple in Columbus since 2003 and was welcomed into fellowship at Calvary Temple in Winterville, N.C., for the last six months of her life.
Miss Handjis was preceded in death by her only sibling James Handjis of Natchez.
Survivors include two nieces, Christina H. Smith and husband, Daniel B. Smith Jr., of Smith Station, Ala., and Elaine H. Shaifer and husband, Gary P. Shaifer, of Natchez; two nephews, James Handjis Jr. and wife, Jackie, of Natchez and John Paul Handjis and wife, Sherry, of Vidalia; and great and grand-nieces, nephews and cousins in Australia, Greece, California and Indiana.
