FERRIDAY — The Ferriday High Trojans wrapped up their spring with a scrimmage against the Delhi Charter Gators on Thursday evening.
Head Coach Cleothis Cummings said they have been waiting for this scrimmage all spring.
“Today was the last day of school and our final scrimmage,” Cummings said. “We wanted to come out and see what our kids’ hard work did.”
The Trojans handled the Gators 24-6 in the scrimmage that gave each team 15 offensive plays for their first team and 12 plays to their second team starting at their own 30 yard line. Then each team received only 12 plays for just their first team and finally four downs a piece in the red zone.
Delhi started off strong with two consecutive 15-yard drives, but Ferriday finally pulled their defense together with an interception by Shawn Sommerrsville.
After the interception pushed Delhi back to the initial 30-yard line, the Trojans recorded their first fumble followed by three sacks in Delhi’s first set of offensive possessions.
Delhi only attempted two passes in their first set of offensive plays against a resilient Trojan defense.
Ferriday’s offense, powered by quarterback Ronald Davis, running back/linebacker Dontrell Domino and wide receiver Adrian Wiggins, scored almost immediately with Domino rushing for 40 yards on the first down. His gain was followed directly by a 10-yard touchdown pass from Davis to Wiggins.
And the Davis-Wiggins connection didn’t stop there as they recorded two more touchdowns passes 30 and 20 yards respectively.
Wiggins said his bond with Davis is something they have been working on.
“It’s all about communication,” Wiggins said. “He knows he can throw it to me and I’ll catch it.”
Cummings said they only ran a limited amount of offensive plays in the scrimmage.
“We only ran about 15 to 16 of our 60 plays,” he said. “We didn’t throw everything out there.”
Both teams scored once more in the red zone plays to make the final score 24-6.
Ferriday recorded five forced fumbles, one interception and four touchdowns on the game.
Cummings said things are progressing with his team.
“I’m pleased but I’m not satisfied,” he said. “To execute how we did, I’m ok but we have a ways to go.”
Ferriday will return to the field on June 4th for a 7-on-7 with Natchez High School before beginning summer workouts on June 10th.
