FERRIDAY — Funeral services for William J. Wheat 83, of Clayton, who died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014, at Baton Rouge Medical Center, will be 2 p.m. Monday at Comer Funeral Home in Ferriday with the Rev. Larry Walters officiating.

Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Natchez under the direction of Comer Funeral Home Ferriday.

Visitation will be 11a.m. until time of services Monday at the funeral home.

William was born Nov. 23, 1930, the son of Harry W. Wheat and Ora Mae Lee Wheat and passed from this life surrounded by his family.

Mr. Wheat graduated from Ferriday High School, was captain on the football team and an avid sports fan. He joined the United States Air Force and was in the Korean Conflict . He was married to the mother of his children — Joan H. Wheat — for 57 years, and worked for Bell South for 38 years. He will be missed.

Mr. Wheat was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two infant children; and two grandchildren, John and Sarah Wheat.

Survivors include three children, William Wheat Jr. and wife, Fran, of Crofton, Mary, Edward Wheat of Clayton and Laura Wheat White of Winnsboro; grandchildren Andrew Wheat, Mary Wheat, Greg White, Kenneth White and wife, Dana, and Joan White; three great-grandchildren, Tanner, Hayden and Aubrey; sisters Marie Hammett of Ferriday, Barbara Pace and husband, Coye, of Lake St. John and Joyce Wiley of Ferriday, Jenni Scott and husband, Bob, of Alexandria, Diane Dawson and husband, Stanley, of Ferriday and Jeraline Hudson of Haughton; brothers Donavan Wheat and wife Dorothy of Kilgore, Texas, and Joe Wheat and wife, Shirley, of Doyline; a number of nieces and nephews and a special friend, Lorna Dauzat.

Pallbearers will be his nephews Butch Hammett, Paul Hammett, Buster Burks, Jimmy Stockstill, Michael Pace and Keister Dillinger.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Sylvester Jones , J. C. Robertson and Coye Pace.
