FERRIDAY — Offensive star power wasn’t lacking in Ferriday when Oak Grove came to town and slugged it out with the Trojans.

The defense, however, was the missing ingredient that ultimately caused the Trojans to fall to 0-2 in district after losing to Oak Grove 48-35.

“We’re at the bottom right now,” Ferriday head coach Cleothis Cummings said. “I’m not saying we have to win out, but we have to win every game the rest of the way…”

With Shannon Morales at quarterback, the Trojans were running the ball effectively. The combination of Morales and Domino led to the Trojans scoring on nearly every possession of the first half. Domino finished the game averaging more than 10 yards per carry.

“Domino and Shannon played big,” Cummings said. “We expected them to. At the same time, we have to get all phases corrected. Even though we were able to put points on the board, we gave up a lot.”

The Trojans and Tigers traded scores back-and-forth, but Cummings said the difference came after Oak Grove recovered an onside kick and went up 42-35.

Cummings said Oak Grove ran a simple dive-option offense, but his team failed to make adjustments and fill holes.

“We have to take a look at the defense,” Cummings said. “I’m not sure if it’s personnel or what, but we have to find some guys on our sidelines that will go out there and play.”

Cummings said his offensive line dominated the trenches, opening up big holes for Domino and Morales to sprint through.

However, fatigue caught up to the unit in the fourth quarter.

“Fatigue set in, and we were unable to run the ball late,” Cummings said.

With the loss, Ferriday falls to 3-4 and 0-2 in district.
