VIDALIA — A Concordia Parish juvenile was sentenced by proxy Wednesday to attend school.
The punishment for missing school? Mom goes to jail.
Judge Glenn Strong sentenced Tina R. Smithart, 33, 117 Ralph Road, Vidalia, to 90 days jail for improper supervision of a minor. Strong suspended the sentence and gave Smithart 12 months probation on the condition her child attend school.
Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office Spokesman Vernon Stevens said the charges originated in the last school year.
“Basically, her child missed more school than (he or she) should have, wasn’t going to school at all, and the judge sentenced (woman) yesterday for that,” Stevens said.
“Part of her sentence was that the child must go to school every day and can’t have any unexcused absences for the rest of the year as part of her probation.”
Smithart was released from the Concordia Parish jail after booking following sentencing.
