1935 – 2015

WOODVILLE — A celebration of life for Sammy Lou Rushing Johnston, who died Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2015, will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Newman’s Funeral Home Chapel in Woodville.

Burial will follow at the Evergreen Cemetery under the direction of Newman Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 4:30 until 6:30 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. until service time Saturday, both at the funeral home.

Mrs. Johnston was born in Centreville, the daughter of Willie and Ida Rushing.

She was a longtime resident of Woodville and a recent resident of Biloxi.

She attended First Baptist Church of Woodville and Fort Adams Baptist Church where she was actively involved. She will be remembered for her love of the Lord and others.

In addition to her church work, she enjoyed playing bridge, trying new recipes and spending time with her friends in the Red Hat Organization, LeMardi Club and Fort Adams Women’s Club. After retiring from Commercial Bank, she traveled Mississippi documenting state history through historical markers.

Mrs. Johnston was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Johnston; her parents; and one sister, Patsy Cockerham.

Survivors include three children, Patti Hughes and husband, Ray, and Gerald Johnston Jr., all of Biloxi, and Lee Johnston and wife, Tina, of Vancleave; and a number of other family members who she adored.
