CLAYTON — Services for Sadie Cummings, 86, of San Francisco, formerly of Ferriday, who died Monday, Dec. 7, 2015, at St. Mary Hospital in San Francisco, will be 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Mark Baptist Church in Clayton.
Burial will follow at Zion Hill Church Cemetery in Ferriday under the direction of Concordia Funeral Home in Ferriday.
Mrs. Cummings was born Oct. 1, 1929, in Ferriday, the daughter of Tom and Sadie Williams Butcher.
She was a retired teacher from Concordia Parish School System.
Mrs. Cummings taught first grade at Sevier Elementary School and was later transferred to Ferriday Lower Elementary during the integration years. She retired in 1977. She loved teaching and contributed greatly to the education of her students, community and family.
Her hobbies included fishing, gardening and cooking.
Mrs. Cummings was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clarence Cummings Sr.; six sisters, Gertrude, Josephine, Ethel, Doris, Bertha and Katie; and six brothers, James, Leon, Joe, Tom, Clarence and Clyde.
Survivors include one son, Clarence Cummings Jr. of San Francisco; one daughter, Loraine Amill of Omaha, Neb.; three grandchildren, MyEsha Soukup and husband, Dan, Jazhan and Coresian Amill; five great-grandchildren, Ania D. Soukup, Daniel J. Soukup, Jazhan J. Amill, Marlee D. Amill and Ricki J.M. Amill; one sister, Augustine Levy of Ferriday; two brothers, Frank Butcher and the Rev. Toby Carlos of Bloomington, Ill.; three godchildren, Irene Polk White, Clara Watson Carter and Joyce Banks; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
