Prep roundups: FCHS girls top JCHS

FAYETTE — Latorya Griffin scored 14 points and Toni Robinson added 12 points as the Franklin County Lady Bulldogs easily defeated the Jefferson County Lady Tigers 71-40 Friday night to go undefeated in MHSAA Region 7-3A.

Franklin County jumped out to an 18-7 lead after one quarter of play and by halftime the Lady Bulldogs had a 37-20 lead over Jefferson County. Haley Turner led the Lady Tigers with 14 points and Malikia Graves had eight points.

Next up for the Lady Bulldogs (20-4, 10-0) and the Lady Tigers (13-10, 7-3) is the Region 7-3A Tournament, which will take place at Jefferson County and starts next Tuesday.

Monterey girls 63, Rapides 41

MONTEREY — Jessica McNeil led four Monterey players in double figures with 20 points as the Lady Wolves got past the Rapides Lady Mustangs in LHSAA District 4-B action Friday night.

Kristin Russell scored 12 points while Kaley Baker added 11 points and Reagan Tiffee chipped in with 10 points for Monterey (20-7, 6-1), which outscored Rapides 24-7 in the second quarter to take a 42-18 lead at the half. The Lady Wolves next play at Oak Hill next Tuesday night.

Homer boys 70, Ferriday 66 (OT)

FERRIDAY — Kadderius Williams led Homer with 19 points and Louis Grant had 13 points as the Pelicans rallied to defeat the Ferriday Trojans in overtime on Senior Night in an LHSAA District 2-2A game Friday night.

Ferriday took a 45-41 lead into the fourth quarter, but Homer forced overtime by outscoring the Trojans 16-12. The Pelicans completed the comeback with a 13-9 advantage in the overtime period. Ferriday (10-10, 2-6) was led by Charles Chandler with a game-high 24 points. The Trojans will be on the road next Tuesday night at Lakeside.

Block boys 63, Montgomery 56

JONESVILLE — Dorian Bowman led Block with a game-high 18 points and William Cummings added 14 points as the Bears needed a big fourth-quarter rally to defeat the Montgomery Tigers in an LHSAA District 4-1A game Friday night.

After a back-and-forth first half ended with Block leading Montgomery 23-21 at halftime, the Tigers hardly missed a shot in the third quarter and outscored the Bears 25-15 for a 46-38 lead. Unfortunately for the Tigers, Block responded in a big way by outscoring them 25-10 in the fourth quarter for the come-from-behind win. The Bears (7-13, 4-2) next play at St. Mary’s Tuesday night.

Homer girls 61, Ferriday 35

FERRIDAY — Senior Night didn’t go exactly as planned for the Ferriday Lady Trojans as they lost to the Homer Lady Pelicans Friday night in an LHSAA District 2-2A match-up.

Led by Jasmine Jenkins and Mya Manuel, Homer dominated the first half en route to a 37-15 halftime lead. Jenkins led all scorers with 16 points and Manual added 10 points. Ferriday (4-16, 1-7) was led by Sha’Keria Kelly with 12 points and MeElle Reed had 10 points. The Lady Trojans play at Lakeside next Tuesday night.

Wilkinson County boys 74, Prentiss 66

WOODVILLE — Phillip Fountain and Allenzae Staggers scored 15 points each for the Wilkinson County Wildcats, who had to rally in the fourth quarter to defeat the Prentiss Bulldogs Friday night in MHSAA Region 7-3A play.

Wilkinson County had a 35-32 halftime lead over Prentiss, but the Bulldogs outscored the Wildcats 18-14 in the third quarter for a 50-49 lead. However, the Wildcats had an response of their own as they outscored the Bulldogs 25-16 in the fourth quarter to pull out the win. Wilkinson County (6-18, 3-7) will next play at the Region 7-3A Tournament at Jefferson County next week.

Block girls 68,

Montgomery 42

JONESVILLE — Quinnesha Branch led Block with 21 points and Ta-Chundra Johnson scored 17 points as the Lady Bears rolled past the Montgomery Lady Tigers in LHSAA District 4-1A action Friday night.

Block led Montgomery 36-26 at halftime and maintained its 10-point lead at the end of the third quarter before outscoring the Lady Tigers 19-3 in the fourth quarter. Taniqua Harbor and Rosie Jefferson added 12 points each for the Lady Bears (6-18, 3-7), who next play at St. Mary’s Tuesday night.
