Prep boys roundups: McCoy duo leads Trinity

GALLMAN — Tommy McCoy led Trinity Episcopal with a game-high 29 points and Dre McCoy had a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds as the Saints defeated the Copiah Academy Colonels 89-76 Friday night.

Garrett Vinson poured in 21 points for Trinity Episcopal, which outscored Copiah Academy 27-16 in what turned out to be the game-changing second quarter for a 42-30 halftime lead.

The rest of the game was quite close with the Saints outscoring the Colonels by a mere two points. Trinity won the game despite Copiah Academy’s Josh Cook knocking down seven 3-pointers as he led five Colonels players in double figures with 23 points.

The Saints also got a solid performance on the boards from Sky Logan, who pulled down 11 rebounds to go with his five points.

Trinity Episcopal (11-5) will be on the road next Tuesday night in its MAIS District 5-AA opener when it takes on Columbia Academy.

Ferriday 49, Lakeside 39

SIBLEY, La. — Brandon Scott led all scorers with 23 points and DaJohn Mitchell added 10 points to lead the Ferriday Trojans past the Lakeside Warriors in an LHSAA District 2-2A game Friday night.

Ferriday’s defense in the fourth quarter proved to be the difference. The Trojans were only up by four points after three quarters of play before outscoring Lakeside 11-5 in the final eight minutes. Frankie Myles led the Warriors with 12 points.

Ferriday (7-10, 2-1) plays at Jonesboro-Hodge next Tuesday night.

Jefferson County 65, Wilkinson County 53

WOODVILLE — Ry’Ale Brown led all scorers with 33 points and Jamel Anderson added nine points to lead the Jefferson County Tigers past the Wilkinson County Wildcats Friday night in a key MHSAA Region 7-3A game for both teams.

Jefferson County had a 12-10 lead over Wilkinson County after one quarter of play before the Tigers put up 22 points in the second quarter as they took a 34-26 lead over the Wildcats into halftime.

The Tigers then put away the Wildcats with a 19-13 advantage in the fourth quarter. The outcome of this game put both teams at 11-9 overall and 3-1 in region play.

Avoyelles 58, Vidalia 56

MOREAUVILLE, La. — Fred Scott scored 16 points while D.J. Turner and Derrick Lair had 12 points apiece as the Avoyelles Mustangs rallied in the fourth quarter to defeat the Vidalia Vikings in an LHSAA District 3-3A game Friday night.

Both teams got off to a slow start and the first quarter ended in a 6-6 tie. Avoyelles then led at halftime 30-22 before Vidalia outscored the Mustangs 16-7 in the third quarter for a 38-37 lead. Unfortunately for the Vikings, they were not able to hold on to their lead as the Mustangs outscored them 21-18 in the fourth quarter.

Vidalia (2-2 in district) was led by Deion Brown with 15 points and Terrell Virgis with 14 points. The Vikings host Marksville Tuesday night.

Block 52, St. Mary’s 37

NATCHITOCHES, La. — Dorian Bowman had 16 points and Trevor Vault added 11 points to lead the Block Bears past the St. Mary’s Tigers Friday night to remain undefeated in LHSAA District 4-1A.

Block’s defense held St. Mary’s to single-digit scoring in three of the four quarters. The Bears led the Tigers 13-6 after one quarter of play and 29-19 at halftime. St. Mary’s tried to get back in the game in the third quarter, but Block responded with a 16-9 advantage in the fourth quarter.

St. Mary’s was led by Blake Teskell, who had a game-high 23 points.

Block (8-12, 3-0) plays at LaSalle Tuesday night.
