NATCHEZ — Lawson Reyes may just be 7 years old, but he is making a name for himself in the outdoors world.

Reyes has been actively hunting, fishing and horseback riding with his father, Roy, and his 10-year-old sister, Ally Crofford, since he was 4 years old and there are no signs of him slowing down yet.

Crystal Reyes, Lawson’s mother, said he is a child who likes to get involved in everything.

“He’s very driven, if he has something on his mind, he doesn’t stop until it’s done,” Crystal said. “He’s relentless until he can try something new.”

Lawson is also an active basketball and football player and he also enjoys dirt bike riding.

But at 4 years old, some people may think that is too young to get active in outdoors activities, but the Reyes family starts at even younger.

Lawson’s younger sister, Lyla, is just two years old and she’s already learning how to shoot targets.

“We all grew up hunting so I knew they’d be OK, and their dad is with them every step of the way,” Crystal said.

Lawson said after three years of training, he feels he is getting better with his hunting ability, but he still has a lot of learning to do.

“I’m still working on it but my aim is pretty good,” he said. “I get close to the center of the target (when I’m practicing).”

Lawson and his family hunt everything from bucks to squirrels, and fish everything from catfish to alligator gar.

Lawson has already shot down a nine-point buck.

Lawson said his favorite part about hunting and fishing is getting to make dinner out of his kills.

Lawson shoots with a .223 hunting rifle, but has recently received a Bear Apprentice 2 compound bow for Christmas and has yet to make a kill with it.

“I’ve gotten to practice with it, but hunting season is in (the fall) and I’ll be using it more then,” Lawson said.

Though Lawson hasn’t been able to shoot down a deer with his bow, that doesn’t mean he hasn’t been able to utilize the bow.

With his father working for an advertising company, Lawson was selected to show off his crossbow skills on national television on a show called The Outdoor Shopper.

Producers of the show came to the Reyes’ residence and set up shop in their front yard as Lawson got hands-on with a new product made for archery called, “Steady Form Torque Eliminator,” Crystal said.

“It keeps the bow steady when using it,” Lawson said.

Lawson said he was excited to be on the show, but he was ecstatic when he saw the show for the first time.

“It came on at 6 a.m. and his dad woke him up to watch it,” Crystal said. “Lawson was giggling so much and couldn’t believe he was on TV.”

As an avid hunter who has already made his first TV appearance, Lawson is on a fast track to an illustrious hunting career, but he said he’s not sure if that is what he wants.

Lawson is a second-grade student at Concordia Parish Academy of Match, Science and Technology and he said he just wants to have fun.

“I don’t quite know what I want to do (when I get older),” Lawson said. “It’s hard to choose between all of the sports I love.”
