Ferriday — Ferriday High School is starving for a district win (2-5, 0-2) with just three more games to turn its season around.

Head coach Cleothis Cummings said he made some major changes to the Trojans’ positions in pursuit of their first district win against Winnfield High School.

“In practice Monday, we changed some things around so we can match up with them offensively and defensively,” Cummings said. “We just made some personnel changes and moved some guys around.”

Cummings said though things must change on both sides of the ball, it’s his defense that must learn to play a full four quarters of aggressive football after a slow start in last week’s game against Oak Grove High School.

“Last week, we didn’t come out to play early,” he said. “We came out really flat defensively and allowed Oak Grove to get big breaks on us and score on those plays.”

But quarterback Shannon Morales must continue to lead the offense, Cummings said, as he is getting more comfortable in his role.

“He threw the ball really well (against Oak Grove) with two touchdowns,” he said. “We found some things that he can do well and he executed them well.”

Cummings said his confidence level is still high with his players, and he expects them to learn from their losses so they can become a greater football team.

“We’re only going to get better,” he said. “We’ve taken some losses, but we’re progressing towards the end of the season.”

No matter their record, Cummings said the goal would remain getting to the playoffs.

“We’re still pushing for a playoff berth, and we’re going to keep fighting for it,” he said.

Ferriday High School hosts Oak Grove at 7 p.m. Friday.
