winnfield — After a tough district loss to Oak Grove last Friday, Ferriday was in desperate need of getting their first district win of the season.

They were able to do that Friday night when they traveled to Winnfield and secured a 47-31 win.

“We started off slow, but we finished strong,” Ferriday head coach Cleothis Cummings said. “The defense played big for us tonight, and the offense was able to get the ball in the end zone. It was a total team effort.”

The 47 points were the second most the Trojans have posted in a game this season, and Friday, they were led by Shannon Morales, who started at quarterback and running back Dontrell Domino.

“He played big and came on big time,” said Cummings of Morales. “He is showing up more now, and we want him to continue to play like he is.”

Cummings said Domino was running hard, but took some good licks from Winnfield.

“Their defense played fast and hard,” he said. “Dontrell came along and grinded it out. You appreciate his hard work, and how he plays and practices every day.”

Wide receiver J’Shon Foster also had a big night for the Trojans, finding the end zone.

Although Ferriday gave up 31 points, Cummings said he was proud of the adjustments the defense made.

“The defense made some big adjustments and the coaches did a great job of getting kids in position to stop them,” Cummings said.

With the win the Trojans improve to 4-4 and Cummings said the team is beginning to mesh like he hoped they would.

“They are coming together,” he said. “We do have a lot of young kids playing. I tell them they have to grow up and tonight they grew up. This doesn’t put us at the top though, we have progress to make.”

Next up for Ferriday is a district clash with Jonesboro-Hodge.
